Kaladin goes to the chasms to practice lashing, manipulating the force and direction with which he lashes to run along walls and eventually fly by lashing himself up. When he reaches a certain height, he lashes himself to the ground with an equal force as that of the sky and floats. On his way back to the warcamp, he tells Syl he needs a Shardblade to defeat Szeth. She tells him that the Shardblades are evil, though one can be made without the taint of the Radiants’ betrayal.

Kaladin considers murdering Amaram, but Syl dislikes who he becomes when he thinks of Amaram and questions why he still has not turned Moash’s group in. When Kaladin returns to his room, he finds Shen there. Shen tells Kaladin that his real name is Rlain and that he must leave. He tells Kaladin he is scared, though he will not elaborate.

Shallan disguises herself as a maid and walks into Amaram’s manor. She tells Amaram that his guards are looking for him with a messenger. After Amaram leaves to speak to the guards, she breaks into his study, where she finds detailed maps of the Shattered Plains and writings that suggest Amaram wants to bring back the Voidbringers.
